Apple Meeting Notes (10/9/12)
- Layered model
- Recommendation - we add all paid and free apps that are needed
- AUP violations could result in loosing capabililty to install apps
- App updates -
- if set up with configurator - users will be able to update apps wirelessly - we may choose to have a kiosk station for students to connect cable to update via usb (useful for large apps like GarageBand) -
- suggestion - just hide a mac mini and have them connect via USB - device must sync with the same computer (supervised with only one computer)
- Remember - MDM is removable
- considering restrictions - network, global proxy, restrict explicit content,
- with iOS 6 can lock to specific apps
- If student removes profile or app - Configurator will add it back to the device
- iTunes accounts are universally being created by the students - not by the schools
- MDM suggestion - only use this for free apps and profiles / restrictions; one district decided that any app costing $4.99 or less is a consumable, so is essentially given to the student when pushed out with MDM
- Naming - use Assign to assign iPads to specific people
- How many iPads per station? Thousands, other than the bottleneck for updating; perhaps have one per grade level
- Note: Generally students will do all updates at home.
- Most schools will allow app store access but throttle the large app downloads
- iPads going home at schools:
- devices broken are more often faculty devices not student devices
- Some theft
- Some districts let local police and hangouts know what devices belong to schools
- Some schools etch id on device
- Some use asset tags - metal stickers are ok
- Label is usually put on the back of the iPad (and is covered by case)
- Configurator
- Make sure to backup computer(s) that you use for Configurator!!!
- Can have a large USB hub - up to 100 - many just use a 16 port usb hub - lock sync cables
- Rollout logistics
- Most problems exist with wireless bandwidth
- Students will use as much as you give them
- Initial use will be lots of browser use; this will go down over time
- Most schools do not print - some use Lantronix box, or spool printer as an airprint device; some schools require a code - hardware that sits on network; Aerohive (bonjor gateway - free) allows routing print traffic
- Turning in student work - email, Google docs, wikispaces, webDav etc.
- Wireless - we have dual band access in each classroom - should be enough to meet demand (may exceed bandwidth)
- New version of configurator will be available in a few days - it will include Global Proxy - we should wait for this to start our deployment
- Add wireless network
- Add security (restrictions) that locks things like Global Proxy
- Enrollment profile - silent profile - to enroll in MDM
- Do other things with MDM
- Deployment
- Have parents involved in deployment
- Make sure AUP is signed if it is different than standard AUP
- Have lots of involvement in deployment - board, press, etc.
- Cart based solutions
- Use morning announcements time to hand out
- Need a plan for end of the day - may want to have one student connect cables
- Generally teachers are not putting apps on iPads
- Have a rubric to follow for teachers to select apps
- AUP
- One to one considerations
- Students have full physical access - considerations should be included in AUP
- Self insurance - may change AUP
- Have a cart available at locations like gym, pool
- If we have large numbers of students creating accounts, contact Matt so that we can be whitelisted (public IP, domain name)
- Maybe have students who need iTunes accounts create them during Advisor
- Any complaints from students seen so far?
- If they are locked out of apps
- No complaints about typing, browsing
- App notes
- Evernote
- Camera to take photo of whiteboard in math, science
- Loaners
- Reassign device through configurator
- Recommendation is to have 5% to 10% available for loaners
- Unless it is dropped on the corner, iPad usually survives a fall
